What does an interior designer in Delhi actually do?

An interior designer plans how a home will look and work, then guides the carpenters, electricians, painters and other trades who build it. The designer is the link between your wishes and the people on site.

This page gives general information about how such projects usually run. It does not describe a company, because this site is an enquiry service. If you want a designer to contact you, you can send an enquiry, or go back to home interior designers in Delhi for the overview.

The usual stages of a flat interior project

Most designers follow a version of this order. The names change, the sequence rarely does.

  1. Brief and first visit

The designer asks how you live, what you want and what you dislike about the present layout. A site visit follows, with measurements and photographs.

  2. Layout and space planning

Furniture positions, walking paths, door swings and storage are drawn on a plan. In a compact Delhi flat, small layout choices make a big difference.

  3. Design, materials and a quote

Colours, laminates, handles, lights and fabrics are chosen. A written quote lists the work room by room, so you can compare it with others.

  4. Site work

Civil changes come first, then electrical and plumbing points, false ceilings, carpentry, painting and finally fittings and furniture.

  5. Handover

You walk through every room, note small defects and agree a date to fix them. Ask for a clear list of what was used and where.

Materials in plain words

You will hear these names often. Here is what they usually mean, without brand names.

  • Plywood

Layers of thin wood glued together. It is used for wardrobes and kitchen boxes. Grades differ, so ask which type is quoted and whether it is made for kitchens or bathrooms.

  • Laminate and veneer

Thin decorative sheets pasted on plywood. Laminate is easier to wipe clean. Veneer is a thin slice of real wood and needs more care in dusty rooms.

  • MDF and other boards

Smooth boards used for painted shutters and some decor. They do not like water, so they are poor choices near sinks.

  • Hardware

Hinges, channels and handles decide how a wardrobe feels after a few years. Ask what is fitted, not only what looks good.

Delhi specific points to raise with your designer

Many Delhi apartments sit in societies with rules about work hours, noise and lift use. Ask the designer how they plan around these rules and who arranges any permission needed.

Dust is another daily fact in the city. In a flat that will be lived in during the work, ask how the site will be covered and cleaned. Summer heat also affects adhesive and paint, so ask whether the schedule suits the season.

If your home is an independent floor, ask about shared staircases and about how materials are carried up.

What to ask an interior designer before you agree

How will the quote be written?

Ask for a room by room list showing the work, the material and the finish, not one total. This is the only fair way to compare designers. Also ask what is not included, such as appliances, curtains, loose furniture or civil repair, so there are no surprises later.

Who supervises the site?

Some designers visit daily and some send a supervisor. Ask who will be on site, how often the designer visits and how you will see progress, for example photographs by WhatsApp. Ask who you should call if work stops for a few days.

How are changes handled?

Plans change once work begins. Ask how a change is priced, how it is agreed and whether it will move the finish date. A short written note for each change protects both sides.

What happens after handover?

Wood and fittings need small adjustments in the first months. Ask how defects are reported, who comes to fix them and how long it normally takes. Agree this before work starts.

What this page is, and is not

This page is general information, not advice for your specific flat and not a quote. We do not decide who you work with, and the designer who contacts you confirms availability, scope and price directly. Availability depends on your area and the date.
